Being President of a Woman Owned Small Business

This week, we sit down with our President, Kiersten Gillespie, and find out what being a woman owned small business means to her.

How did you come to work at Specialty Cases?

I worked with my predecessor, John Gump, for many years in the packaging industry. When he purchased the company in 2005, he called me to help manage the business. I’ve been here since!

What are your goals for the company?

I’d like the company to grow and help be a part of the economy in Maryland. There is so much we have to offer to the industries and government organizations of the state, too.

What do you feel is Specialty Case’s biggest contribution to the industry?

There’s a lot of ways we contribute. We help every single customer who calls us. Our value added solutions are second to none in both function and price.

What does it mean to be the President of a woman owned small business?

I think the deepest meaning involves how I can represent women, not only as a business owner, but as someone in the supply chain, and in the working world. When there’s a woman in charge, it gives more of a voice to women everywhere.

Very few manufacturing and wholesale companies are woman owned. How do you explain the discrepancy?

Women are only beginning to discover the rewards of being passionate in this sector. I’m very proud of this, too. But to whom much is given, much is required. I feel responsible for a lot.

What else do you like to do?

Mix media art. I like to read too. I have two wonderful kids.

What do you like most about working here?

My boss is really understanding.
